Daryl Louis Polenz, 78, of White Plains, New York, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at White Plains Hospital. Daryl was born on December 8, 1930 in Leigh, Nebraska. He was the fourth child and third son of Louis Frederick and Sophia (Dasenbrock) Polenz. Daryl's family relocated to Manchester, Iowa in 1940 and shortly thereafter to Waverly. Daryl attended middle and junior high schools in Manchester. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1948. He subsequently matriculated Wartburg College in Waverly, but left after two years to join the Air Force. He was honorably discharged four years later and enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames. While at ISU, Daryl was active in college theater. He appeared in numerous undergraduate plays including giving a memorable portrayal of Iago in the school's production of Othello. Daryl graduated from ISU in 1957 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Thereafter Daryl moved east to New York to take a position in the employee educational services department of International Business Machines. On July 8, 1961 after an eight month courtship, he was united in marriage to Joanna Magda Uberall by his brother, the Rev. Lester Polenz, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The marriage was dissolved in 1990.
Daryl spent his entire professional career at IBM where he worked in a variety of capacities including having a long-term role in connection with the well-known antitrust case brought by the federal government against IBM. In 1990, Daryl joined Prodigy Services Company, the IBM joint venture and early on-line service provider. He retired from Prodigy in 1993. At the time of his death, Daryl was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Scarsdale, New York.
Daryl is survived by three children: Teresa Ann Delany of New York, New York, Daryl Philip Polenz of Pleasantville, New York, and Elizabeth Sophia Rapoport of New York, New York; six grandchildren: Hadley, Forbes, Margot and Seth Delany, Bryce Polenz, and Jake Rapoport; and three siblings: Martha Esmay of Tucson, Arizona, Donald Polenz of Phoenix, Arizona and Lester Polenz of Mansfield, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and his ex-wife. Daryl's cremains will be committed to the family plot at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Waverly on Thursday, August 6 at 2:00 pm. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Pastor Curt Schneider will officiate.
